This indicator shows the share of renewables in the gross final energy consumption i.e. excluding conversion losses in connection with e.g. the production of electricity and district heating. This indicator can therefore not be compared with Gross Inland Consumption (ENER05) where conversion losses are included. The share of energy from renewable sources is calculated for three types of consumption beside the overall share: Transport, Heating and Cooling, and Electricity. The EU target is a 20 percent overall share of renewables by 2020.

The 2020 national targets are: 30 percent for Denmark, 72 percent for Iceland, 49 percent for Sweden, 38 percent for Finland, and 67.5 percent for Norway. Renewable energy includes hydropower, geothermal energy, wind energy, and fuels from biomass. Renewable municipal waste is also included.

reporting country

Greenland

The proportion of renewable energy for electricity and heat, up to 2015, has been calculated from the public supply of electricity and heat. Includes surplus heat from incineration in waste plants purchased by the public utilities and distributed via the district heating network. From 2016 and forward, at the moment there is data available only for 'Percent of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption, %'.

Finland

Includes Åland.

EU

From June 2020: EU refers to EU27_2020, which is the European Union with a fixed area composition of the current 27 countries.
